Pentecost

The Feast of Pentecost, whose name means the ‘fiftieth day’, is the last day and concluding feast of Eastertide. The entire season of Easter, or Paschal tide, is a single celebration of fifty days, being the high point of the entire Church’s year.

As we celebrated the resurrection of Christ our Lord on Easter Day, so now we celebrate the outpouring of the fruits of that glorious victory over sin and death upon all Our Lord’s disciples.

The beautiful sequence, which is a poetical extension of the second Alleluia verse, is a meditative prayer on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Unlike most of the Mass texts, which date back to the early centuries, the sequence comes from the Middle Ages, and is ascribed to the English Cardinal and Archbishop, Stephen Langton.
