The season of Eastertide lasts for eight weeks, during which time we celebrate the resurrection, the appearances of the Risen Lord to the disciples, and His preparing them for His Ascension and for the Coming of the Holy Spirit. So today, the last Sunday before the Feast of the Ascension, Our Lord tells His disciples that He is about to leave the world to return to the Father.
But this does not mean that the disciples will be bereaved of His presence; He promises to send the Holy Spirit, who will lead Our Lord’s followers into all truth, and who will make the risen Lord present in his Body, the Church. For it is only with the promised coming of the Holy Spirit that Christ’s followers can be formed into a single body, that is, into the mystical Body of Christ.
Moreover, this same Holy Spirit will give the disciples a new understanding of the relationship between God the Father and God the Son, and thereby enable all Christ’s followers to share in that relationship; in other words, to share the very life of the blessed Trinity.
Together with all the parish clergy and staff, I wish you and your loved ones every blessing this Paschaltide.
